In the Victorian and Edwardian times, directories - like today's Yellow Pages - were published containing lists of the shops, businesses, places of worship, local attractions and important residents of each town. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem as though any were made about Walkden, which is such a shame as they are full of detail about the lives of ordinary people.
On this page, I'm going to attempt to draw together the various sources - censuses, newspaper articles and so on - to compile directories of Walkden at various times in it's history, to bring to life the streets where our ancestors shopped, worked, ate, prayed, relaxed and lived.
My first 'directory' will be Walkden 1911. I'll be publishing the information first on the 'Walkden Lives' blog, then cataloguing it here in an easy to search format.
